Workers' Compensation Benefit: Reimbursement for Mileage

As part of your workers’ compensation claim, you are entitled to be reimbursed for your mileage if the round-trip distance to your doctor’s office or designated medical facility is more than 10 miles from your home. Your accrued mileage will be reimbursed at the rate designated for South Carolina state government employees eligible for mileage reimbursement (as of 2009, it was approximately $0.50 cents per mile or the rate established by the Internal Revenue Service, whichever is lower).

You will need to provide documentation to your employer’s insurance carrier which:

  • clearly identifies the name and address of the doctor or medical facility where you are getting treatment,
  • includes a calculation of the roundtrip distance that you cover in order to get to your appointments, and
  • includes any doctor’s letters or reports received from such physician to indicate the scope of his or her treatment.

Keep a photocopy of every item submitted to the insurance carrier for your own records. Send all documentation to the insurance carrier via “certified mail return receipt requested.” Keep the mail receipt with your records.
