Darlington, South Carolina

Home to Darlington Raceway and NASCAR’s annual Southern 500 race, as well as being South Carolina’s center of Tobacco farming, Darlington is a well known small county of the South. Though the origin of the Darlington’s name is not certain, many attribute the county’s name to Revolutionary War Colonel Darlington. The county’s landscape boasts beautiful Darlington Oak trees draping with Spanish moss. When South Carolina decided began to prepare itself for secession, Darlington formed the Darlington Guards. The guards were a group of men that were ready to defend South Carolina. The group was first called on to defend Charleston. After they defended Charleston and served their enlistment, many of the men reenlisted to again. The Darlington Guards were active for almost two years and received their own Armory in 1893. Many of the men continued to serve the state and many joined the National Guard. The last surviving member of the original Darlington Guards died in 1984. Even though Darlington did not have any Civil War battles fought in its county, the county is rich with southern history.
